Canadian Tuxedo

Hello, Friends and Sleevenistas!  In case you didn’t know, wearing denim on denim is commonly known as a Canadian Tuxedo.  As I was coming up with the title for this post, I wondered how exactly denim on denim became known as a Canadian Tuxedo.  What’s Canadian about denim??  Maybe it’s the lawyer in me, but I decided to do some research (like I don’t have other things to do. Lol).   Apparently, in 1951, Bing Crosby, the famous American singer, was denied entry into a hotel in Vancouver, Canada because he was wearing denim on denim. Specifically, he was wearing Levi’s denim.  The hotel thought he was too casually dressed for entry because denim was not something a high-class person would wear.  Eventually, someone recognized him and he was allowed into the hotel.  But, somehow, word got out to Levi’s about this incident, so Levi’s decided to fix this high-class issue and created a tuxedo jacket for him made entirely of denim so that he would be dressed up enough no matter where he went.  Levi’s called the look, the Canadian Tuxedo.  And somehow from all that, wearing denim on denim became known as a Canadian Tuxedo.  I think I first heard of this term when Brittney Spears and Justin Timberlake (Here) wore those hideous matching denim outfits to an awards show in the early 2000s.

Anyhoo, now that we know our Canadian Tuxedo history, here is a perfect representation of this look!  A denim jacket with denim pants and Ta Da!! Just like that, I’m Canadian.  Lol. Ok, not really.  I’ve always been a fan of pairing denim with denim.  I usually wear different shades of denim, unlike in today’s post and this previous post.  For example, I often wear my lighter colored chambray top with dark jeans (like HERE, but usually more casual).  And HERE, I wore my blue chambray top with white jeans.  Do you ever wear a Canadian Tuxedo?

Have a great week, and thanks so much for reading!
